Today, we are surrounded by gadgets and devices that are smart, for example, Smartphone, Smart TV, Smart Refrigerators, etc. However, with the advancements in technology and increasing proliferance of artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc., we are rapidly moving from ‘smart’ devices to ‘intelligent’ devices. Companies are introducing new, innovative technologies and features that are catering to the demands of the tech-savvy 21st century marketplace. The recently unveiled Snapdragon X70 Modem is a testament to this.
World’s First 5G AI Processor
Qualcomm, an American chipmaker recently announced its latest 5G cellular modem, The Snapdragon X70. A successor to the Snapdragon X65, the X70 is being claimed by the company as “The world’s first 5G AI processor integrated in a 5G Modem-RF system.” The processor promises a higher real-world bandwidth, increased download and upload speeds, and more efficient power saving. The prominent highlight of the X70 is that it has a built-in AI processor that will provide real-time, dynamic optimizations to improve the connection quality.
A Revolution on the Cards?
While the exact date for the adoption of Snapdragon X70 modem in smartphones is not disclosed yet, it is rumored to be rolled out for all the 5G devices by the end of this year. Although the phones we use today can perform a certain tasks—such as taking photos, surfing on social media, playing music, etc.—very well, we are yet to see intelligent features offered by AI in the smartphones.
Given the advantages and cutting-edge features promised by the company, the X70 might well augment the AI revolution in smartphones. The features like AI-based channel–state feedback and optimization, AI-based mmWave beam management, AI-based network selection, AI-Enhanced Signal Boost, etc. will surely help boost the smartphone’s performance and make it much more powerful. These features can cater to the requirements of what we expect ‘an intelligent phone’.
As of now, we cannot firmly claim that the Snapdragon X70 modem will turn ‘smartphones’ to ‘intelligent phones’. However, the introduction of Snapdragon X70 surely seems to be an optimistic step towards the change. If companies continue to work on more such technologies, don’t be surprised to see an intelligent phone in your hands within the next few years.
