Pfizer, one of the world’s leading drug manufacturers has recently recalled some of its blood pressure medications stating that they contain some impurities that can induce the risk of cancer.
Pfizer’s Recall
Pfizer is recalling several lots of its blood pressure medication as it contains increased levels of nitrosamine which can increase the cancer risk. It is recalling six lots of Accuretic tablets, one lot of quinapril, and hydrochlorothiazide tablets as the nitrosamine level in these drugs was above the acceptable daily intake limit. “Everyone is exposed to some level of nitrosamines. These impurities may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels over long periods of time,” Pfizer said in a statement.
Although instances of companies recalling drugs due to potential healthcare risks have become normal today, Pfizer’s recall is once again giving rise to the long-stretched debate on the reliability of the drugs.
Are Modern Medications Reliable enough?
According to a report, prescribed medication is the third most common cause of death after heart diseases and cancer. This statistic is alarming, to say the least. We can say that we have progressed a lot in terms of finding a solution for numerous incurable diseases, streamlining the healthcare system, bringing treatments to the patient faster, etc. However, there are still a lot of loopholes in the healthcare industry that need to be filled.
Some of the modern medications, despite their effectiveness, also come with several associated risks. Therefore, we cannot be 100% reliant on these medications. Companies should research thoroughly about certain elements used while preparing any medications. Developing and using modern medications smartly can transform lives in a way one could not even imagine!
