LG sets milestone

LG Electronics (LG) has tested wireless 6G terahertz (THz) data transmission and reception over 100 meters in an outdoor scenario. On August 13, the data flowing between Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) and the Berlin Institute of Technology in Germany reached this milestone in partnership with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s biggest applied research lab.

One of the major problems in the advancement of wireless 6G has been the requirement for power amplification to create a steady signal across ultra-wideband frequencies due to the short-range of 6G THz and power loss during transmission and reception between antennas. The power amplifier created by LG, Fraunhofer HHI, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) was critical to the test’s success.

Ambient Internet of Everything

In the frequency range of 155 to 175 GHz, the power amplifier can generate steady signal output up to 15 dBm. LG also demonstrated adaptive beamforming, which adjusts the direction of the signal in response to changes in the channel and receiver position, as well as high gain antenna switching, which mixes output signals from numerous power amplifiers and sends them to particular antennas.

6G networks will be able to handle higher wireless transmission and communication rates with low latency and great dependability, with worldwide standardization set for 2025 and commercialization four years later. 6G will be a significant component of the Ambient Internet of Everything, a new technology that promises to improve living and working environments by making them more sensitive, adaptable, autonomous, and customized to the requirements of customers by recognizing human presence and preferences.

Leading the way for 6G

With a variety of early-mover efforts, LG Electronics is leading the way in securing 6G core technologies. In cooperation with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, the country’s leading research institution, LG created the LG-KAIST 6G Research Center in 2019. To take the partnership to the next level, LG and KAIST brought on board Keysight Technologies Inc., a global producer of wireless communications testing and measuring equipment, earlier this year. LG was chosen head of the Next G Alliance’s Applications Working Group in June. The Next G Alliance is an industry effort of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) that aims to enhance mobile technology leadership in 6G in North America for the next decade and beyond.
