Vaccination is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. However, various instances stating the side-effects of the COVID vaccine are constantly making the situation more ambiguous.
There were numerous cases of people getting affected with fever, body pain, nausea, etc. instantly after vaccination. While these issues were not much alarming and easily curable, some serious after-effects of the vaccine have also been recorded of late. In the past few months, several instances of people suffering from hearing issues after taking the COVID vaccine have been reported. These issues are being linked with the vaccines, raising questions about their reliability.
In a recently published newsletter, the World Health Organization (WHO) has examined the potential hearing problems linked to COVID vaccines.
Is this really threatening?
WHO has reported 367 cases of tinnitus and 164 cases of hearing loss globally among people that received the COVID vaccine. If you compare this with the total number of vaccine doses distributed around the world which is over 11 billion, the hearing problem seems to be rare. The report analyzed people from 27 countries including the U.S., U.K., etc. and more than a third reported among these were people working in the healthcare industry.
The report states that a majority of people suffering from hearing problems managed to recover, however, some people found tinnitus after COVID vaccination to be severe and life-altering for months. But if the causes of tinnitus are analyzed, we cannot find a specific prominent cause. According to a report, up to 10 percent of the U.S. population is estimated to have experienced tinnitus from any cause.
Thus, WHO mentions that there is yet no evidence stating that the vaccines may cause hearing problems. Although the research on this topic to date is limited, from the available information, we can say that the COVID vaccines do not cause or aggravate any hearing problems.
Rumors about the COVID Vaccine
Ever since the vaccination drives around the world have started, numerous rumors about the after-effects of the vaccine have been circulated. A majority of these rumors are absurd and are not backed by any scientific evidence. However, if taken seriously, they can cause fear and misunderstanding among people very quickly.
