Recently, Apple introduced a brief glimpse of iOS 16 which will come later this year. iOS 16 includes the most significant update to the Lock Screen in iPhone history, as well as new sharing, communication, and intelligence features that have the potential to enhance the iPhone experience for users.

Addressing the development, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi said, “iOS 16 is a big release with updates that will change the way you experience iPhone, we have reimagined how the Lock Screen looks and works with exciting new features that make it more personal and helpful.”

Can a Personalized Lock Screen get rid of Third-party Apps?

Android has had an upper hand over iOS when it comes to personalizing the lock screen and getting innovative with different widgets. Although there are many third-party apps for iOS to personalize lock screens and widgets, they have not delivered 100% in the long run. Third-party apps ‌crash and lose data and the user has to go through all the customizing to set up the screen they want.

iOS 16 can improve the Lock Screen by making it more personal, appealing, and useful. The subjects of images are elegantly arranged in front of the clock on the Lock Screen with a new layering effect, producing a sense of depth. With expressive text styles and color choices, users can vary the appearance of the date and time.

Let’s ‌look at some of the Personalized Lock Screen’s features.

  • The Lock Screen includes widgets inspired by Apple Watch complications, allowing you to quickly access information such as upcoming calendar events, the weather, battery levels, alarms, time zones, activity ring progress, and more.
  • A new Lock Screen gallery offers a variety of options for inspiration, including Apple collections such as Pride and Unity to commemorate special cultural moments.
  • A Weather wallpaper that displays live weather ‌as they change throughout the day, as well as an astronomy wallpaper that displays views of the Earth, moon, and solar system.
  • Lock Screens can be created by users using their favorite emoji or color combinations. Users can switch between their favorite Lock Screens with a simple swipe.
  • Live Activity is a new feature that allows users to stay up to date on real-time events such as a sports game, workout, ride-share, or food delivery order right from the Lock Screen.
  • Notifications have been redesigned to roll up from the bottom, allowing users to see their personalized Lock Screen clearly.

What are the Other Updated Features?

iOS 16 is being deemed as one of the most significant software updates for iOS. It is said to include the iCloud Shared Photo Library, which allows users to easily share a collection of photos with family, updates to messages and new mail tools to help users stay in touch, and powerful enhancements to Live Text and Visual Look Up. Apple Pay Later with Order Tracking and other features are added to Wallet. Moreover, the next generation of CarPlay is updated.

Final thoughts

Over the years, Apple has customized its features with every update but has made close to no upgradation with the lock screen. The last upgradation in the lock screen was when Apple released the iPhone 11. The update just customized the notification bar icons with some minor updates. Users fascinated by personalized lock screen experience had no other option other than turning to third-party applications. With iOS 16 providing a much-awaited built-in personalizing Lock Screen feature, it will be interesting to see the response it gets.
