On 2 Nov 2021, Microsoft announced its venture into the Metaverse bandwagon at its Ignite 2021 event—pertaining to “the evolution into the metaverse.” Microsoft’s announcement came immediately after Facebook rebranded its parent company name to ‘Meta’ for emphasizing its plans for the metaverse.
The tech giant announced the launching of a new solution Mesh for Teams in 2022. It is positioned as the gateway to the metaverse and will enable users to be present in a meeting through personalized avatars and immersive spaces that can be accessed using any device without the requirement of any special equipment. Moreover, it will be build on existing Team features such as Together mode and Presenter mode that make remote and hybrid meetings more collaborative and immersive
Microsoft has also announced the launch of Dynamics 365 Connected Spaces, which is currently under preview. In a statement released by the company, it stated that the product will provide a new perspective on the way people move and interact with nearly any space—from the retail store to the factory floor along with the way they manage health and safety in a hybrid work environment.
“As the digital and physical worlds come together, we are creating an entirely new platform layer, which is the metaverse. We’re bringing people, places and things together with the digital world in both the consumer space, as well as in the enterprise,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said at the event.
He further added, “We are taking these platform capabilities and building them into our own first-party applications, like Teams. Features like grid views, Together Mode and Presenter Mode in Teams mark the beginning of bringing 2D immersive experiences to collaboration.”
