Nintendo’s online store crashes as Switch goes on pre-order in Japan

Nintendo’s online store in Japan crashed on Monday due to heavy traffic after it opened pre-orders for Switch, its latest console.

The company has put up a message regretting the inconvenience caused due to heavy traffic on its webpage “My Nintendo Store” since the morning, Efe news reported.

Switch is set to launch on March 3. And other websites, including Amazon Japan, exhausted their quota within 15 minutes of opening pre-orders on Saturday.

While that’s obviously not ideal, it’s good news for Nintendo in one way as it clearly reflects an incredible amount of interest in the new hybrid console. The 3DS has been a massive success in its homeland, and Nintendo will be hoping that the Switch can replicate this performance – rather than imitate the dire commercial fortunes of its current home console, the Wii U.
