Key Highlights:

  • The low-level programming tool will allow users to write codes in natural languages without having any prior coding knowledge
  • The tool is based on GPT-3 which is considered to have great potential in the AI industry
  • The product is the first outcome of Microsoft’s partnership with the AI research company OpenAI, which was announced in 2020

Power App Ideas

Coding and software technology go hand-in-hand. Both of these technological marvels have come a long way in recent years. With favorable amalgamations with AI, the software industry is always on the rise. In 2020, a new language AI tool was developed which possessed the capability of writing in different styles, answering complex questions, and writing bits of code. The tool, Generative Pre-Trained Transformer-3 (GPT-3), is considered to have great potential in both the AI as well as the software industry.

Microsoft purchased its license in September 2020. Recently, the tech giant announced the launch of a programming software based on GPT-3 that will allow users to write codes without having any prior knowledge of coding.

Microsoft’s AI Product

The Washington-based tech company announced that it has developed a low-code programming tool that will convert natural language into ready-made code. This implies that users do not necessarily need to have coding knowledge or learn computer codes or other formulas for app development. This also does not suggest that the web-based application has the potential to write an app for a user. The programming tool will enable a user to write low-level bits of code with the click of a button.

Called ‘Power App Ideas’, the product is the first outcome of Microsoft’s partnership with the AI research company OpenAI, which was announced in 2020. The programming tool uses OpenAI’s GPT-3 based AI model. This model is currently claimed to be one of the most advanced natural language AI models in the entire world.

Functioning Of Power App Ideas

According to Microsoft’s blog post, the programming tool will enable users to simply write an app according to their convenience and in a natural language. The AI will automatically generate codes in PowerFx, which is an open-source low-code programming language developed by Microsoft. The company clarified that the codes will be accompanied by an explanation of how they work.

By fine-tuning GPT-3 to understand how Power Fx formulas are constructed, we can leverage the model’s existing strengths in natural language input to give Power Apps makers the ability to describe logic just like they would to a friend or co-worker and end up with the right formula for their app,” Microsoft stated in its blog post.

Shortage of Coders in the Software Industry

According to the corporate vice-president (CVP) of Microsoft’s Low Code Application Platform, the low-level programming tool was developed keeping in mind the shortage of coders across the globe. He stated that the United States alone faces a shortage of about a million developers. Companies that are currently facing shortages of coders and are not able to afford experienced programmers can be greatly benefited from the programming tool. The product will also help beginners tackle basic tasks like analytics, data visualization, and workflow automation.
