Chennai Super Kings- N Srinivasan
Chennai Super Kings is one of the well-known and established franchise teams in the IPL. It is owned by the Chennai Super Kings Ltd, which is a subsidiary of India Cements Ltd. The team is led by the former ICC chairman N Srinivasan. Under his supervision, the Chennai Super Kings were not only performing well but also won the IPL titles five times in the years 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.
Delhi Capitals- Parth Jindal
Delhi Capitals also have a huge significance in the Indian Premier League. The GMR group and JSW group own it: a property development company and a steel manufacturing house combined. In 2018, the stake was sold to the JSW for 550 crores, and since then, it has become a member, which marked a pivotal partnership between the GMR group and the JSW group, which was co-led by Parth Jindal. This strategic partnership proved to be successful with the change of Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals.
Punjab Kings- Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman, and Karan Paul
The Punjab Kings was previously known as Kings XI Punjab, a franchise owned by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, businessman Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman, and Karan Paul. This acquisition took place in 2008. Despite not winning any title, the team has demonstrated superb performance throughout the years.
Mumbai Indians- Mukesh Ambani
Mukesh’s Mumbai has led the IPL throughout the years with its extraordinary performances and many titles. The ownership is undoubtedly by the renowned and wealthiest family, the Ambanis. However, the industry is not directly owned by Reliance Industries; it is owned by India Win Sports Limited, which is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries. India Win Sports Limited was established in 2007. Both Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani are responsible for making decisions for the team.
Kolkata Knight Riders- Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla
Another franchise that is bestowed with other groups of Bollywood celebrities is Kolkata Knight Riders. The Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla and actor Shahrukh Khan, along with Jay Mehta, are the owners of the Kolkata Knight Riders. It was acquired by the Shah Rukh Khan film production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, in collaboration with Juhi Chawla and her spouse, Jay Mehta.
Sunrisers Hyderabad- Kalanithi Maran
Sunrisers Hyderabad is another franchise team on our list that has witnessed a high evolution in ownership. The team was initially known as Deccan Charges, which the Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited owned, and it participated in the IPL from 2008 to 2012. Due to the financial challenges and subsequent ownership changes faced by the franchise, it was acquired by the Sun Group led by Kalanithi Maran, who introduced the team’s new identity as the SunRisers Hyderabad.
Rajasthan Royals- Manoj Badale, Lachlan Murdoch
The Rajasthan Royals also stands as one of the reputed franchises in the Indian Premier League. It is headquartered in Jaipur, which is loved and has fans across the globe. The team gained fame and popularity by being the first winner of the IPL launch in 2008. However, later, they faced many challenges, scoring the subsequent victories. Their tenure was marred with rumors of betting in the match-fixing scandal, resulting in the two-year ban for the Rajasthan Royals. Despite all the setbacks and the adversities, the team emerged again, fueled by the unwavering support of its dedicated fan base.
Royal Challengers Bangalore- United Spirits
The RCB franchise is owned by the United Spirits- A subsidiary of the British Alcoholic Beverages Company, Diageo. United Spirits is one of the largest spirits companies in the world, and it purchased the RCB in 2008. Though the team has not won any titles, they are trying their best to emerge and win titles in the upcoming matches.
Gujarat Titans- Steve Koltes, Donald Mackenzie, Rolly van Rappard,
In 2018, the CVC partners acquired a controlling stake in the Indian Premier League, which was earlier known as the Gujarat Lions. After the acquisition, it was renamed the Gujarat Titans and is currently owned by the CVC capital partners.
Lucknow SuperGiants- Dr. Sajiv Goenka
Sanjiv Goenka is the head of the RPSG group and the owner of the Lucknow SuperGiants, who won the bidding war at the cost of 7090 crores. The company won the rights of the Lucknow team in the auctions which the BCCI hosted in Dubai on October 25, 2021.
