SpaceX has selected Qualcomm to supply cellular infrastructure technology for Starlink Mobile’s planned nationwide US terrestrial 5G network. The SpaceX Qualcomm partnership will bring Qualcomm Dragonwing platforms and software to tens of thousands of cellular sites, supporting the development of the Starlink Mobile 5G network, with deployment expected to begin in 2027.
The partnership supports SpaceX’s plan to combine satellite connectivity with ground-based mobile infrastructure. Qualcomm’s Dragonwing platforms and commercial-grade Layer 1 software will provide the radio and baseband processing technology for Starlink Mobile’s terrestrial network.
What Is the SpaceX Qualcomm Partnership?
The SpaceX Qualcomm partnership is a multi-year agreement under which Qualcomm will supply cellular infrastructure platforms for Starlink Mobile’s planned US terrestrial 5G network.
Qualcomm announced on November 4, 2026, that SpaceX had selected its Dragonwing Cellular Infrastructure platforms. The Qualcomm SpaceX agreement includes the QRU100 and QDU100 platforms, along with commercial-grade Layer 1 software.
SpaceX plans to deploy the network across tens of thousands of sites over the multi-year agreement. The companies have not disclosed the financial terms.
Qualcomm described the SpaceX Qualcomm deal as its biggest 5G deal to date.
Why Is SpaceX Building a Terrestrial 5G Network?
SpaceX plans to combine satellite connectivity with ground-based cellular infrastructure through a Starlink satellite and terrestrial network.
Starlink’s satellite connectivity is intended to complement conventional cellular coverage, while the terrestrial component will use ground-based sites to provide 5G connectivity across the planned SpaceX 5G network.
The Qualcomm SpaceX agreement covers technology for the Starlink Mobile 5G network. SpaceX Senior Vice President of Starlink Michael Nicolls described the broader plan this way:
“Starlink is building the first fully-integrated nationwide satellite and terrestrial network that will keep people connected no matter where they are.”
How Will Qualcomm Dragonwing Support Starlink Mobile?
Qualcomm Dragonwing platforms will provide radio and processing technology for Starlink Mobile’s planned terrestrial network.
The agreement includes two platforms:
- Dragonwing QRU100: Provides highly integrated processing for Massive MIMO radio units, supporting the radio functions behind the 64T64R architecture.
- Dragonwing QDU100: Provides high-performance, efficient, latency-sensitive Layer 1 processing.
Starlink Mobile will use Massive MIMO radio units with 64 transmit and 64 receive paths (64T64R). Qualcomm says this architecture is designed to improve coverage, capacity, and spectral efficiency while helping the network handle more traffic efficiently.
The QRU100 and QDU100 platforms are also designed to improve performance per watt across radio and distributed-unit processing, supporting more energy-efficient infrastructure deployment at scale.
What Is SpaceX’s Mobile Network Strategy?
The SpaceX mobile network strategy brings together its satellite constellation and a planned network of terrestrial 5G base stations. Qualcomm’s Dragonwing platforms will support the terrestrial component, providing the radio and processing technology needed for the planned infrastructure.
Qualcomm says nationwide deployment is expected to begin in 2027. This is an infrastructure rollout timeline, not a confirmed date for nationwide consumer service.
SpaceX has not announced a confirmed Starlink Mobile launch date for nationwide commercial availability. The Qualcomm announcement also does not specify consumer pricing or final coverage.
Starlink Mobile vs Verizon: How Does the Network Compare?
The Starlink Mobile vs Verizon comparison highlights how SpaceX plans to approach the US wireless market alongside established carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile already operate established terrestrial wireless networks. SpaceX plans to take a different approach by combining its satellite connectivity with a dedicated terrestrial 5G infrastructure.
The Qualcomm agreement confirms the technology supplier for Starlink Mobile’s planned ground-based network. It does not provide enough information to compare service prices, speeds, coverage, or performance with existing carriers.
What Does the SpaceX Qualcomm Partnership Mean for Future Networks?
Qualcomm’s Dragonwing platforms are designed to give Starlink Mobile a flexible foundation for a multi-band network. Their radio and distributed-unit processing capabilities can support deployment across multiple rollout phases, allowing SpaceX to expand its terrestrial 5G infrastructure in stages.
The SpaceX Qualcomm partnership also connects the current 5G project with Qualcomm’s broader vision for AI-native 6G infrastructure. While the announced agreement focuses on the Starlink Mobile terrestrial network, the platforms reflect a longer-term approach to developing more advanced cellular infrastructure.
As deployment moves toward its expected 2027 start, the partnership gives SpaceX an established technology provider for the ground-based side of its mobile network strategy. How effectively this infrastructure works alongside Starlink’s satellite services will help determine the reach and capabilities of its future mobile offering.
