The SpaceX Starlink Mobile spectrum acquisition is an agreement for SpaceX to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz spectrum licenses. Announced on October 8, 2026, the agreement covers up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum and remains subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval and other customary closing conditions.

SpaceX plans to combine the low-band spectrum covered by the agreement with Starlink Mobile’s existing 2 GHz mid-band spectrum. The planned network will combine satellite-to-mobile connectivity with terrestrial wireless infrastructure to support wireless service in the United States.

The SpaceX Starlink Mobile spectrum acquisition is intended to add a low-band coverage layer to Starlink Mobile. Lower-frequency radio signals generally travel farther and can penetrate many building materials more effectively than higher-frequency signals under comparable conditions.

According to SpaceX’s announcement, the new low-band spectrum is intended to help Starlink Mobile’s signal reach compatible devices through obstacles such as walls.

SpaceX plans to combine three network components:

  • 800 MHz spectrum: Adds a low-band coverage layer.
  • 2 GHz mid-band spectrum: Supports network capacity.
  • Satellite and terrestrial wireless infrastructure: Combines connectivity from space with ground-based wireless deployment.

Actual coverage will depend on network deployment, signal conditions, device compatibility, and other technical factors.

The SpaceX wireless spectrum acquisition is intended to support Starlink Mobile by combining satellite connectivity with terrestrial wireless infrastructure.

Direct-to-device technology allows compatible mobile phones to connect through satellites. SpaceX plans to combine this capability with its spectrum assets to develop a network that uses both satellite and ground-based infrastructure.

The 800 MHz spectrum is intended to add low-band coverage, while the existing 2 GHz spectrum is intended to provide capacity. The effectiveness of this approach will depend on how SpaceX deploys and operates the network.

What Is the Status of FCC Approval for the Spectrum Acquisition?

The FCC has authorized SpaceX to deploy a total of 15,000 Gen2 Starlink satellites, but that authorization is separate from the Grain Management spectrum acquisition.

The spectrum agreement still requires the necessary regulatory approval and other closing conditions before it can be completed. Authorization for the satellite constellation does not mean all 15,000 satellites are already deployed, nor does it complete the spectrum acquisition.

SpaceX must obtain the required regulatory approvals and satisfy the other closing conditions before completing the Grain Management spectrum acquisition. Network deployment and confirmation of service availability are also outstanding steps for its planned mobile service.

The SpaceX Starlink Mobile spectrum acquisition would give SpaceX access to additional low-band spectrum for its planned wireless network. Regulatory approval and network deployment will determine how the new spectrum contributes to Starlink Mobile’s coverage and service.
