IonQ is set to expand its cybersecurity portfolio through a proposed acquisition of Elisity. On October 12, 2026, IonQ announced a definitive agreement to acquire the cybersecurity company in an all-stock transaction valued at up to $1.3 billion. The IonQ Elisity acquisition would bring Elisity’s Zero Trust security platform into IonQ’s quantum technology and cybersecurity portfolio.
What Does the IonQ Elisity Acquisition Include?
The IonQ Elisity acquisition would add Elisity’s enterprise cybersecurity platform to IonQ’s quantum technology and security portfolio. Elisity’s Zero Trust tools help organizations control which users, devices, workloads, and AI agents can access enterprise networks.
The IonQ $1.3 billion acquisition includes an earnout opportunity of up to $150 million, subject to Elisity’s business performance. The transaction remains pending and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.
According to IonQ’s announcement, Elisity has more than 100 customer deployments worldwide. IonQ identifies a microsegmentation market opportunity worth more than $10 billion.
Why Is IonQ Acquiring Elisity?
IonQ’s cybersecurity strategy includes post-quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution. The IonQ Elisity acquisition would add Elisity’s network access controls to those cryptographic security capabilities.
- Post-quantum cryptography (PQC): PQC uses cryptographic algorithms designed to resist quantum-computer attacks. In August 2024, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finalized its first three post-quantum cryptography standards, helping organizations plan their transition to quantum-resistant cryptography.
- Quantum key distribution (QKD): QKD uses quantum-based methods to distribute cryptographic keys. IonQ’s security portfolio includes PQC and QKD, while Elisity provides identity-based network access controls.
The IonQ Elisity acquisition would bring IonQ’s cryptographic security capabilities together with Elisity’s network access controls in a proposed security offering for enterprise and government customers.
How Does Elisity’s Zero Trust Platform Work?
Elisity’s IdentityGraph platform uses identity, asset, and risk information to help security teams create access policies for enterprise networks. The platform supports policies for users, devices, workloads, and AI agents, allowing organizations to limit each identity to the network communications it needs.
Zero-trust architecture requires organizations to verify access rather than automatically trust users or devices connected to an internal network. Elisity applies this principle through network microsegmentation, which allows security teams to enforce access policies across specific identities and network connections.
IonQ plans to combine Elisity’s network access enforcement technology with its cryptographic capabilities. IonQ also plans to extend Elisity’s IdentityGraph roadmap with cryptographic inventory and risk information, helping customers identify cryptographic systems that may need updates.
How Does the IonQ Elisity Acquisition Relate to Quantum Cybersecurity?
Quantum-era cyber threats include the risk that future quantum computers could break some cryptographic systems in use today. Enterprise network security must also restrict unauthorized access and limit the spread of cyberattacks between connected systems.
IonQ’s post-quantum cryptography capabilities use algorithms designed to resist quantum-computer attacks. IonQ’s quantum key distribution capabilities support cryptographic key distribution, while Elisity’s Zero Trust platform controls network access and restricts unnecessary communications between users, devices, and systems.
The IonQ Elisity acquisition would combine IonQ’s cryptographic technologies with Elisity’s network access controls to help protect enterprise networks and critical infrastructure. Elisity CEO James Winebrenner said in the announcement,
“With IonQ, we will be optimally positioned to partner with them to modernize their crypto-agility programs, accelerate post-quantum cryptography capabilities while advancing their holistic Zero Trust posture and deploy hybrid-cybersecurity solutions today that are prepared for the quantum future.”
When Is the IonQ Elisity Acquisition Expected to Close?
IonQ expects the acquisition to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions, including required regulatory approval. IonQ and Elisity will remain separate businesses until the transaction closes.
The IonQ Elisity acquisition is expected to create opportunities for IonQ to cross-sell complementary security products and expand its relationships with enterprise and government customers.
