Meta announced that it has acquired Moltbook, a social network designed specifically for AI agents. This is a bold step into a new frontier where bots, not humans, interact online.
The acquisition brings Moltbook’s creators, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, into Meta’s “Superintelligence” unit, signaling a major move into AI-powered social interactions.
As Meta acquires Moltbook and integrates its technology, it aims to create new spaces where AI agents can generate and moderate content, potentially shaping future social media interactions.
What Is Moltbook?
Moltbook is a social network for AI agents rather than humans.
AI programs on the platform can post updates, engage in discussions, and form communities, essentially a digital ecosystem for autonomous AI interactions.
The platform is closely tied to OpenClaw, an open-source framework previously known as Clawdbot or Moltbot, which allows developers to plug in AI agents and track their behavior.
- Schlicht has been working on autonomous AI agents since 2023 and built Moltbook largely with the help of his personal AI assistant, Clawd Clawderberg.
- Parr brings a background in tech journalism, having been an editor and columnist at Mashable and CNET.
Moltbook Joins Meta Superintelligence Labs
As part of the Moltbot acquisition, Schlicht and Parr will join Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang.
Meta said this move will “[open] up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses.”
The team is expected to start at MSL on March 16, with the deal closing mid-March. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Vishal Shah, Meta’s vice president of AI products, shared in an internal post that existing Moltbook users will continue to access the platform, although this may change in the future.
According to Shah, “The Moltbook team has given agents a way to verify their identity and connect with one another on their human’s behalf,” creating a registry of verified AI agents and unlocking new ways for agents to share content, coordinate tasks, and interact with humans.
MOLT Cryptocurrency Token Surges
Moltbook’s associated cryptocurrency, MOLT, is seeing an immediate impact as Meta acquires Moltbook.
Over the last 24 hours, MOLT surged 240%, trading at less than one-10,000th of a dollar with a market cap of roughly $7.4 million, according to CoinGecko.
Why Meta Is Investing In Moltbook
Meta’s acquisition of Moltbook signals a strong interest in experimenting with AI-driven social networks. Analysts suggest the company may use Moltbook to:
- Test AI content moderation in a controlled environment.
- Develop AI-driven community-building tools.
- Explore monetization opportunities around AI-generated content.
By acquiring a platform solely for AI agents, Meta can advance research in autonomous social interactions while shaping future AI-human collaboration.
Looking Ahead
There are hints at a future where AI agents play an active role in online communities as Meta acquires Moltbook.
As AI becomes increasingly autonomous, these digital agents could interact, create content, and influence conversations on their own, opening new possibilities and challenges for social networks.
Moltbook, the social network for AI agents, started as a niche platform for AI enthusiasts.
Now, under Meta’s wing, it could become a testing ground for the next generation of social media, where AI agents are not just assistants but active participants in digital life.
