OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil is now live on GenAI.mil, the U.S. Department of War’s enterprise generative AI platform. Launched on August 31, 2026, ChatGPT Mil is accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5) and is designed to support planning, policy, logistics, and administrative work. The platform is built to support more than 3 million military and civilian personnel.
The launch adds OpenAI’s system to a growing group of commercial AI capabilities available through GenAI.mil. Google Gemini was the platform’s first frontier AI capability, while Grok for Government from Starshield AI also launched on GenAI.mil on August 31.
What Is OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil is a custom version of ChatGPT designed for the Department of War’s government-controlled environment. It is approved for the department’s unclassified work and operates on authorized government cloud infrastructure with security controls for sensitive information.
The current ChatGPT Mil experience includes chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs. The Department of War says the system is intended for document-heavy work across areas such as:
- Planning and policy
- Logistics
- Administration
- Research and mission support
OpenAI also identifies uses such as analyzing policy and guidance documents, drafting and reviewing procurement and contracting materials, generating internal reports and compliance checklists, and supporting research and planning workflows.
What Does Impact Level 5 Mean for ChatGPT Mil?
Impact Level 5 means ChatGPT Mil has been accredited for certain sensitive unclassified workloads, including Controlled Unclassified Information. This is an important boundary because the deployment is designed for approved unclassified work rather than unrestricted access to classified military information.
OpenAI says data processed through GenAI.mil remains isolated within the government environment and is not used to train or improve its public or commercial models.
This security structure allows the Department of War to apply generative AI to routine knowledge work without treating the platform as a replacement for systems handling information with higher classification requirements.
How GenAI.mil Became a Multi-Model AI Platform
GenAI.mil began in December 2025 with Google Gemini for Government as its first frontier AI capability. The Department of War described the platform as a way to bring multiple commercial AI models into a government-controlled enterprise environment.
The department announced its partnership with OpenAI in February 2026, with plans to bring ChatGPT to GenAI.mil for its military and civilian workforce. OpenAI described GenAI.mil at the time as a secure enterprise AI platform used by 3 million civilian and military personnel.
By August 31, GenAI.mil had onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users of the Department of War’s more than 3 million personnel. The same day, the department launched Grok for Government alongside ChatGPT Mil.
GenAI.mil now provides access to capabilities from multiple AI developers:

- Google: Gemini for Government
- Starshield AI: Grok for Government
The expansion makes GenAI.mil a broader military AI platform with multiple commercial AI capabilities rather than a system centered on one model.
Why the Military Is Using Generative AI for Routine Work
The immediate role of ChatGPT Mil is to support the large volume of information-based work that supports military organizations. Policy documents, procurement materials, reports, research, and planning can all require substantial time to review or prepare.
OpenAI’s deployment is designed to support these workflows rather than position ChatGPT Mil as an autonomous military decision-maker. The Department of War describes the system as a capability for document-heavy unclassified work across planning, policy, logistics and administration.
This is where generative AI in the military is moving from individual experimentation toward broader enterprise deployment. Instead of testing AI only through isolated projects, the department is putting multiple commercial systems inside a common enterprise environment.
What OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil Means for U.S. Defense AI
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil marks the latest stage in the Department of War’s expansion of enterprise AI. GenAI.mil started with Google Gemini in December 2025 and has since expanded to include additional commercial AI capabilities, including ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government.
The development also shows how OpenAI military AI is being applied to practical government workflows. ChatGPT Mil is not being introduced as a general-purpose classified military system. Its current role is narrower and clearly defined: providing approved AI assistance for sensitive unclassified work.
With more than 1.7 million unique users already onboarded and multiple commercial models available, GenAI.mil is becoming a larger enterprise environment for the Department of War’s adoption of generative AI. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil is the latest addition, with its use bounded by the security requirements for CUI and other approved unclassified workloads.
