Why Is Amazon Expanding Robotics Manufacturing in Indiana?
Amazon’s Greenwood project adds U.S. manufacturing capacity alongside its expanding robotics network. Amazon says it has manufactured more than one million robots in the United States, with those robots deployed across more than 300 facilities globally.
Amazon’s robotics operations have grown since the company agreed to acquire Kiva Systems for approximately $775 million in 2012. Kiva’s technology was designed to move products to employees for picking, packing, and stowing inside fulfillment operations.
The Greenwood facility will add manufacturing capacity for products supporting Amazon’s fulfillment and robotics network. Amazon also announced a separate robotics manufacturing investment in Texas in August 2026, making Greenwood part of a broader expansion of Amazon’s domestic manufacturing footprint.
Why Did Amazon Choose Greenwood, Indiana?
Amazon selected Greenwood because Indiana offers manufacturing talent, logistics infrastructure, and access to engineering workers, according to Amazon and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. The Indianapolis region has a pipeline of more than 2,500 industrial engineering graduates annually, while Indiana’s advanced manufacturing sector supports more than 518,000 jobs.
Indiana’s central location and transportation infrastructure also connect the Greenwood facility with Amazon’s broader fulfillment network. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation says the state’s transportation infrastructure ranks 13th nationally and provides access to Amazon facilities across North America.
Amazon’s Greenwood project adds to an existing Indiana footprint. Amazon says it began operations in Indiana in 2008 and has since invested more than $40 billion in the state and created more than 27,000 jobs.
What Jobs Will Amazon’s Indiana Manufacturing Facility Create?
Amazon’s Indiana manufacturing facility will create 300 manufacturing and engineering jobs. Amazon and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation say the positions will pay an average of nearly $100,000 per year.
The announced positions include:
- CNC operators
- Welders
- Powder coating technicians
- Assemblers
- Manufacturing engineers
- Quality assurance specialists
- Controls engineers
- Program managers
These Amazon manufacturing jobs in Indiana cover production, engineering, quality assurance, controls, and program management. The roles align with the manufacturing processes planned for the Greenwood facility, including robotic welding, automated powder coating, and assembly.
How Does the New Amazon Indiana Manufacturing Facility Expand Its Indiana Footprint?
The New Amazon Indiana manufacturing facility expands Amazon’s Indiana footprint into advanced manufacturing and represents another step in Amazon Indiana expansion, complementing the company’s existing fulfillment, delivery, and technology operations in the state. Amazon says its Indiana operations began in 2008 and have since expanded into a broader network that includes fulfillment and sortation centers, delivery stations, robotic facilities, and other infrastructure.
Amazon’s latest announcement also places the Greenwood project within a wider U.S. manufacturing strategy. Amazon says it has invested more than $230 billion in the U.S. on goods and equipment from manufacturing since 2010, supporting more than 100,000 manufacturing-related jobs across the country in 2026.
When Will Amazon’s Greenwood Manufacturing Facility Open?
Amazon expects the Greenwood manufacturing facility to launch by 2028, with Amazon planning to purchase and equip the 585,000-square-foot site before operations begin.
The new Amazon Indiana manufacturing facility will add 300 manufacturing and engineering jobs and produce products that support Amazon’s fulfillment and robotics network across North America. With advanced fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating, assembly, and AI-powered systems, the Greenwood facility expands Amazon’s manufacturing presence in Indiana.
