Amazon is investing an initial $5 billion in Anthropic today, with the potential for up to an additional $20 billion in the future based on specific commercial milestones.

This new Amazon Anthropic deal brings Amazon’s total investment in the AI startup to a staggering $33 billion when including previous funding rounds.

As part of this collaboration, Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion over the next decade on Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies to build and deploy its future AI models.

Why the Amazon Anthropic Deal Matters for the AI Race

By securing Anthropic as a long-term partner, Amazon ensures that one of the world’s most advanced AI creators is tethered directly to its cloud infrastructure.

This move is not just about capital; it is about infrastructure and custom silicon.

Anthropic will use AWS as its primary cloud provider, relying on Amazon’s massive data centers to train and serve its Claude models to millions of users.

For Amazon, this partnership validates its heavy investment in custom-designed chips. Rather than relying solely on expensive, high-demand hardware from third parties, Amazon is proving that its own “Trainium” and “Graviton” chips can power frontier AI at a global scale.

Anthropic to Invest $100 Billion in AWS Technologies

While Amazon is providing the capital, Anthropic is providing the long-term demand. The startup’s commitment to spend $100 billion on AWS over 10 years is one of the largest cloud service agreements in history.

This spending will focus on:

  • Custom Silicon: Anthropic will use current and future generations of Trainium chips to train its most advanced models.
  • Massive Scale: The deal secures up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of power capacity to support Anthropic’s growing computational needs.
  • Global Reach: The partnership includes an expansion of “inference” (the process of running a trained AI model) in Europe and Asia to better serve international users.

Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, noted the necessity of this growth: “Our users tell us Claude is increasingly essential to how they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand”.

Powering Research with an Anthropic Amazon Data Center Strategy

To support this level of growth, the two companies are collaborating on massive infrastructure projects. One of the most notable is Project Rainier. This is one of the largest AI compute clusters in the world, utilizing nearly half a million Trainium2 chips.

FeatureProject Rainier Details
HardwareNearly 500,000 Trainium2 chips

This Anthropic Amazon data center collaboration allows Anthropic’s engineering team to work almost daily with Amazon’s Annapurna Labs. They provide direct feedback to help shape the design of next-generation chips, ensuring that the hardware is perfectly optimized for the software it runs.

Training the Next Generation with Anthropic Amazon Chips

The heart of this deal lies in Anthropic Amazon chips. By moving away from a total reliance on external GPU providers, Anthropic is betting big on Amazon’s custom silicon.

  1. Trainium2: Significant capacity is coming online in the second quarter of this year.
  2. Trainium3: High-performance capacity is expected to be available later in 2026.
  3. Trainium4: Anthropic has already committed to using future generations of these specialized chips.
  4. Graviton: Anthropic also utilizes tens of millions of Graviton CPU cores for superior price performance in daily operations.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy highlighted the efficiency of these tools: “Our custom AI silicon offers high performance at significantly lower cost for customers, which is why it’s in such hot demand”.

Making Claude More Accessible to Developers

The Amazon anthropic deal also simplifies how businesses use AI. A new “Claude Platform on AWS” is currently in private beta. This allows developers to access the full Anthropic-native experience directly through their existing AWS accounts.

This means businesses don’t need to manage separate contracts, billing, or security credentials. They can use the same AWS access controls they already trust to manage their Claude workloads. Currently, over 100,000 organizations already run Claude models on Amazon Bedrock, including major names like Pfizer and Lyft.

  • Lyft: Used Claude via Bedrock to power a customer care assistant, reducing resolution times by 87%.
  • Pfizer: Uses Claude to help scientists search through drug development documents, saving 16,000 search hours annually.

Global AI Competition and Financial Growth

This deal comes at a time of explosive growth for Anthropic. The company reported that its run-rate revenue has surpassed $30 billion, a massive jump from the $9 billion reported at the end of 2025. This rapid growth has occasionally strained their infrastructure, making the expanded Anthropic AWS partnership vital for maintaining reliability for free and professional users.

Interestingly, Amazon is also diversifying its bets. Reports indicate Amazon is also investing $50 billion in OpenAI, showing that the retail and cloud giant wants to be the infrastructure provider for every major player in the AI space.

End Note

The Amazon Anthropic deal is a clear signal that the future of AI will be built on massive, custom-designed infrastructure. By combining Amazon’s capital and silicon expertise with Anthropic’s frontier AI research, the two companies are positioning themselves to lead the next decade of technological innovation.

For AWS, this $25 billion investment and the subsequent $100 billion spending commitment from Anthropic solidify its status as the world’s most powerful AI cloud.

As more businesses integrate Claude into their daily workflows, the partnership between these two giants will likely define the boundaries of what is possible in generative AI.
