Christmas Lights

Why Christmas Lights Are a Strategic Business Decision

Follow Us:

Business leaders spend considerable time on strategy, brand positioning, customer experience, hiring, technology, and marketing campaigns with measurable return expectations. Unfortunately, November rolls around and the exterior of the building stays dark while one of the highest-value commercial periods of the year plays out around them. They’ve forgotten to invest in one of the most crucial elements.

Every business is working to shove marketing in the faces of the consumer, leading most ad campaigns to look like noise. It’s an overflow of the same messaging – “we want your money. Spend it here.” But the consumer is smart and doesn’t want to feel like another number.

Mastercard SpendingPulse reported that U.S. retail sales grew 3.9% year over year between November 1 and December 21, 2025, with in-store transactions still accounting for 73% of all holiday purchases. Consumer spending is concentrated, foot traffic is elevated, and the competition for customer attention is at its peak. The businesses that show up visibly during this window do better than those that don’t. That observation is less obvious than it sounds, because showing up visibly requires a decision made weeks before the season starts.

Yes you want to convert potential customers to customers, but you’ve tried so many different things. Maybe it’s time to invest in something much more simple, yet effective – the exterior aesthetic of your business.

The Exterior Is a Revenue Variable

Most leaders think about their customer experience as something that begins inside the building. The research suggests otherwise. A study cited by commercial property specialists found that 70% of first-time sales are influenced by a business’s exterior presentation.

Well-chosen Christmas lights along a roofline, entrance, or building perimeter create that invitation. They work every evening without additional staffing, without ongoing ad spend, and without any effort beyond the initial installation. For a business operating during the weeks of highest consumer intent, that continuous presence has measurable value.

Why does this work? Potential customers want to feel that a business is not just there to sell them something, but actually care about their experience as well. The holidays are a time when people feel nostalgic, joyful, and even sad, so a well-placed Christmas light display will ensure that the shopping experience is more than just a chore. The holidays can be chaotic, especially when last minute shopping occurs. A Christmas light display gives them a moment to stop and cherish the present. You, as a business owner, can give them something different that stands out amongst all the noise.

Where Leaders Make the Wrong Call

The most common mistake is treating exterior holiday lighting as a cost rather than an investment, and then selecting the cheapest available option to minimize that cost. Consumer-grade string lights are designed for residential, occasional use. They are not engineered for the run times, weather exposure, and visual consistency that a commercial exterior demands across six to eight weeks of operation. They fail faster, look less uniform, and require replacement more frequently than the sticker price implies.

Commercial-grade installations are built to a different standard: heavier wire, weatherproofed connections, UV-stable materials, and individually replaceable bulbs. Purchased once and stored properly, a quality commercial setup lasts multiple seasons. The per-season cost, spread across five or more years, is modest relative to the visibility and impression it generates during the period of highest commercial activity in the calendar year.

Cheaper lights may seem like a better upfront cost; however, the investment for long-term guarantees a big picture view of cost savings. Let this year be the year you stop replacing Christmas lights and displays by finding proper online retailers that serve commercial spaces.

The Leadership Lens

Leaders who think carefully about how their organizations show up in the world, and who treat the physical environment as a reflection of their brand values, tend to make better decisions across the board. The exterior of a business in December is one of the most visible signals that organization sends to its community, its customers, and its own team.

Businesses that approach it deliberately, that choose their equipment with care, plan the installation in advance, and treat the display as part of their overall customer experience strategy, capture more value during the holiday season than those that improvise or skip it entirely. The revenue data from the 2025 holiday season shows that in-store sales grew 2.9% year over year, even in a cautious consumer environment. Physical presence drives revenue. Making that presence as welcoming and visible as possible is a decision that belongs in the strategic conversation, not the facilities checklist.

Let this year be the year that you invest in the aesthetic of your business. Do what the other businesses are not doing, and make this season special for your customers and potential customers.
