Netflix appointed Peter Rice as its new chief content officer on October 15, 2026, replacing Bela Bajaria, who is leaving after nearly 10 years with the streaming platform. Rice will take up the role on October 26, 2026, leading Netflix’s global content organization and overseeing scripted and unscripted series, films, and live events across all regions.

Netflix’s new chief content officer, Peter Rice’s career at Fox and Disney included leadership across television networks and studios. His experience spans film production, television programming, forming the professional background needed for Netflix’s global content organization.

Who Is Peter Rice? His Career at Fox and Disney

Peter Rice is an entertainment executive whose career spans film production, studio leadership, and television programming. He previously held senior positions at Fox Searchlight Pictures, 21st Century Fox, and The Walt Disney Company.

Rice graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1989. He later became president of Fox Searchlight Pictures, which released films including Slumdog Millionaire, Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, and Sideways.

Rice subsequently served as president of 21st Century Fox and chief executive officer of Fox Networks Group. Most recently, he served as chairman of Walt Disney Television and chairman of general entertainment at The Walt Disney Company.

At Disney, he oversaw operations spanning multiple networks and studios, with more than 300 shows and 4,000 hours of television annually, according to Netflix’s official announcement.

What Will Netflix’s New Chief Content Officer Oversee?

Netflix’s new chief content officer, Peter Rice, will lead the platform’s global content organization, overseeing films, scripted and unscripted series, and live events across all regions.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in the official announcement,

“His business acumen is sharp, his talent relationships are exceptionally strong, and his experience across TV and film is deep and broad.”

Rice said,

“I’m excited to work with the team to help bring even more great stories to members everywhere.”

Rice will take over the chief content officer role from Bajaria, while Ted Sarandos will continue as Netflix’s co-CEO.

Bela Bajaria’s Departure and Netflix Content Strategy

Bela Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 and became chief content officer in January 2023. During her tenure, Netflix expanded its programming to include unscripted shows, live events, and sports, according to Netflix’s official announcement.

Sarandos acknowledged Bajaria’s contribution in Netflix’s announcement, saying,

“She helped broaden our content offering to include the large-scale expansion of unscripted programming and the launches of live events and sports.”

Bela Bajaria’s departure from Netflix marks a change in leadership for the team responsible for the platform’s films and series. Netflix has confirmed that Bajaria is leaving after nearly a decade but has not stated that her departure was caused by the workforce reductions announced in October 2026.

Netflix Layoffs in October 2026 and the Leadership Change

Netflix told employees on October 14, 2026, that it planned to cut approximately 1,000 jobs. This equals about 6% of its workforce. Netflix announced Peter Rice’s appointment the following day. The available announcements do not establish a direct connection between the workforce reductions and Bajaria’s departure.

Netflix has not announced any immediate changes to its content slate as part of the leadership transition. Rice’s appointment as Netflix’s new chief content officer marks a change in who will lead the global content organization, while the announcement leaves its future programming priorities to be outlined separately.
