Amazon and OpenAI have announced a multi-year strategic partnership to accelerate AI innovation for enterprises and startups globally. As part of this collaboration, Amazon will invest $50 billion in OpenAI, starting with an initial $15 billion followed by $35 billion in the coming months.

This OpenAI Amazon deal introduces OpenAI models, the Codex coding agent, and Managed Agents to Amazon Bedrock, allowing businesses to build generative AI applications within the AWS infrastructure they already trust.

AWS: The Exclusive Third-Party Cloud For OpenAI Frontier

AWS is now the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier. This platform allows organizations to build and manage teams of AI agents that operate across real business systems.

Because Frontier includes built-in governance and enterprise-grade security, companies can move from experimental projects to full-scale production without managing the underlying infrastructure.

Co-creation of a Stateful Runtime Environment

A major technical highlight of the OpenAI Amazon deal is the co-creation of a Stateful Runtime Environment. Unlike traditional stateless APIs that require developers to manually build orchestration layers, this environment allows agents to:

  • Maintain context and remember prior work across different sessions.
  • Work across various software tools and data sources seamlessly.
  • Execute complex, multi-step workflows with “working context” that carries forward memory and identity.
  • Access compute, memory, and identity elements natively within AWS.

This environment is designed to run optimally on AWS infrastructure and is expected to launch in the next few months.

AWS Bedrock GPT-5 and OpenAI Models

For the first time, AWS customers can access the latest OpenAI models, including the frontier model GPT-5.5, through the same APIs they use for other providers. This integration means that AWS Bedrock GPT-5 access will inherit all existing enterprise controls, such as IAM-based access management and AWS PrivateLink connectivity.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated, “OpenAI and Amazon share a belief that AI should show up in ways that are practical and genuinely useful for people.” He further added, “Combining OpenAI’s intelligence with Amazon’s infrastructure and global reach helps us put powerful AI into the hands of businesses and users at real scale.” 

Integration of Codex and Managed Agents on AWS

The OpenAI AWS deal also brings specialized tools to the cloud environment:

  1. Codex on Amazon Bedrock: Over 4 million people use this coding agent weekly. It is now available in limited preview, allowing developers to write, refactor, and explain code using their AWS credentials.
  1. Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents: This service is powered by OpenAI frontier models and is optimized for building production-ready agents. It uses the OpenAI agent harness for sharper reasoning and reliable steering of long-running tasks.

Hardware Integration: The Role of Trainium

To support the massive demand for these new services, OpenAI has committed to consuming approximately 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity through AWS infrastructure.

This commitment includes the use of Trainium3 and the next-generation Trainium4 chips.

Trainium4, which should begin delivery in 2027, will offer significantly higher compute performance and expanded memory bandwidth to support increasingly capable AI systems.

Custom Models for Amazon Applications

Beyond enterprise services, OpenAI and Amazon will collaborate on customized models to power Amazon’s own customer-facing applications.

Amazon developers will be able to tailor these models for use across various AI products and agents. These custom tools will complement Amazon’s existing Nova family of models, providing more options for building at scale.

Andy Jassy, President and CEO of Amazon, noted, “We have lots of developers and companies eager to run services powered by OpenAI models on AWS, and our unique collaboration with OpenAI to provide stateful runtime environments will change what’s possible for customers building AI apps and agents.”
