When Wang was only 13, his father, a local carpenter, died from cancer, leaving the family with no way to make money. In order to survive, his older sisters had to marry early, and the family even had to give away his youngest sister for foster care because they could not afford to feed her.

And then just two years later, Chuanfu’s mother sadly passed away from working too hard.

The Sacrifice of an Older Brother

By the age of 15, Wang was an orphan. He almost gave up on school, but his older brother, Wang Chuanfang, would not let him. Even though the brother was only 18 and had just started his own family, he insisted on supporting Chuanfu’s education.

His brother and sister-in-law worked small jobs to send him 10 yuan every week for school. Once, when the family home was destroyed in a storm, his sister-in-law even went door-to-door to borrow the 4 yuan he needed for his weekly expenses.

Finally, when Chuanfu got into university in 1983, they gave him their most valuable possession: their wedding present, a “Shanghai” brand wristwatch.

From Chemist to Business Owner

Wang focused on his studies to repay his family’s kindness. He earned a degree in metallurgical physical chemistry from Central South University in 1987 and later moved to Beijing to earn a master’s degree in battery technology.

Later, in 1993, Wang Chuanfu moved to Shenzhen to manage a battery company for the government. There, he saw a big opportunity: Mobile phones were becoming popular, but the batteries were expensive and dominated by Japanese companies.

So in 1995, Wang quit his stable job to start his own company, BYD, with a $352,000 loan from his cousin.

What does BYD stand for?

BYD stands for “Build Your Dreams.” Originally, the name “Biyaidi” was just a set of Chinese characters that sounded good, but the company later gave it this English meaning.

Making Batteries with People, Not Robots

At first, Wang did not have enough money to buy the expensive robots used by Japanese factories. Instead, he designed a system where humans did small, simple tasks using specialized tools.

In 2008, the world started to notice BYD. 

Warren Buffett’s company, Berkshire Hathaway, invested $230 million for a 10% stake.

Moreover, Buffett’s partner, Charlie Munger, called Wang a “genius” and a “workaholic” who works 17 hours a day.

This investment gave BYD the money and the reputation it needed to grow globally.

However, in September 2025, Berkshire Hathaway gradually reduced and eventually exited its 17-year investment in BYD, marking the end of one of its most notable early bets on the electric vehicle industry.

Major Tech Wins: Safety and Speed

  • Brazil: BYD built a massive factory in Brazil on a site once used by Ford. It plans to make 300,000 cars a year there by the end of 2026.
  • Europe: BYD is starting production at its factory in Hungary and plans to open 2,000 dealerships by the end of 2026.
  • Thailand: BYD currently leads the market in Thailand and has one of the largest booths at the 2026 Bangkok Motor Show.

Beyond education, Wang has also been recognized globally for his broader social impact. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led BYD’s rapid shift to producing masks and essential medical supplies, helping address global shortages.
