Louisiana SpaceX Project Brings $100 Billion Starbase to Vermilion Parish

The Louisiana SpaceX project will bring a planned $100 billion Starbase campus to Vermilion Parish near Pecan Island. SpaceX plans to develop the 125,000-acre site as its largest U.S. launch facility, with five launch complexes, each containing two launch pads, along with propellant facilities, power generation, vehicle processing, and employee housing. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2027, with the first launch targeted as soon as 2029 and initial operations expected in 2030.

The project is designed to increase SpaceX’s Starship launch capacity while expanding Louisiana’s role in the growing commercial spaceflight industry.

What the Louisiana SpaceX Project Will Build

The Louisiana SpaceX project is planned as a large aerospace campus rather than a single launch pad.

At full buildout, the facility is expected to include five launch complexes and 10 launch pads, along with propellant farms, a propellant production facility, power generation, vehicle processing infrastructure, and residential housing for employees and their families. The site is planned to support high volume of launches annually.

The project is also expected to have a significant employment impact. Louisiana Economic Development projects 3,000 direct jobs over the next 10 years, with an average annual salary of $92,600. It estimates more than 8,100 indirect jobs, creating more than 11,100 potential job opportunities across Acadiana.

The project also includes a local payment agreement. SpaceX is expected to pay $20 million upfront and $25 million annually for 25 years, with the project announcement projecting more than $820 million in direct local payments over the agreement’s term.

Why SpaceX Chose Pecan Island

The Pecan Island location offers several features that fit SpaceX’s plans for high-frequency launches.

Its Gulf Coast position provides access to a wide range of launch trajectories. The large property also gives SpaceX room for launch infrastructure, safety areas, and future expansion.

Energy is another factor. Louisiana Economic Development says the area offers access to abundant natural gas that can support the facility’s power and fuel requirements. The Gulf Coast location also provides access to water transportation, which can be useful for moving large aerospace hardware.

These characteristics make the site suitable for a project that SpaceX intends to operate at a much larger scale than a conventional launch facility.

From Apollo to Starbase Louisiana

The Louisiana SpaceX project also connects with a much older part of the state’s aerospace history.

NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans has supported U.S. human spaceflight programs since 1961. During the Apollo era, workers at Michoud built the first stages of the Saturn IB and Saturn V rockets, which played a major role in America’s lunar program.

Michoud continues to support major space programs today. NASA uses the facility to manufacture and assemble major components of the Space Launch System, which supports the Artemis program.

The historical connection is therefore straightforward. Louisiana has long provided the manufacturing and industrial capabilities needed for large space hardware. The new SpaceX project adds a major commercial launch operation to that aerospace base.

Starship Is Central to the New Spaceport

The Louisiana SpaceX project is closely linked to SpaceX’s Starship program.

Starship is the company’s fully reusable launch system. SpaceX plans to use the vehicle for missions in Earth orbit and future missions involving the Moon and Mars. The Louisiana facility is intended to help the company increase Starship launch capacity as the program moves toward larger-scale operations.

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said the company’s goal is to make space travel more routine and described Starbase Louisiana as part of that long-term vision.

The Vermilion Parish facility is expected to become SpaceX’s fourth and largest U.S. launch site.

What the Project Means for Coastal Louisiana

The scale and location of the development also make environmental planning an important part of the project.

SpaceX has engaged the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, along with other state agencies, to address potential effects on wildlife, fisheries, and supporting habitats. The company also plans to work with conservation organizations and experts to identify opportunities to protect and enhance natural resources around the site.

The project will therefore involve more than constructing launch pads. Transportation, utilities, workforce development, coastal infrastructure, and environmental planning will all be important as development moves forward.

SpaceX also plans to hold town halls and other community engagement events in the surrounding area, giving residents opportunities to learn more about the project and provide feedback.

Louisiana’s Next Aerospace Chapter

The Louisiana SpaceX project brings together Louisiana’s aerospace history and the next phase of commercial spaceflight.

Michoud helped build the Saturn rockets that supported the Apollo missions. Now, Starbase Louisiana is planned to support reusable Starship vehicles and a much higher frequency of future launches.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2027, while the first launch is targeted for as soon as 2029, with initial operations expected in 2030.  If SpaceX follows that schedule, Vermilion Parish could become an important new center for commercial spaceflight in the United States.

The Louisiana SpaceX project therefore marks a new chapter in the state’s long relationship with the American space industry, adding large-scale commercial launch infrastructure to Louisiana’s established aerospace manufacturing history.
