Meta Platforms has officially launched a standalone app for its Meta AI assistant. This move positions Meta to directly compete with existing AI assistants from major players like OpenAI and Google. As Meta Launches AI app, it aims to increase the assistant’s usage beyond Meta’s integrated platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.

The launch of the Meta AI app is a strategic step by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to strengthen Meta’s standing in the competitive AI landscape. The app is designed to offer more personalized responses, leveraging context and user-specific information from linked Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Powering the Meta AI assistant is Llama 4, Meta’s latest large language model. Llama 4 is built to compete with the most recent AI models from rivals like OpenAI, Google, Deepseek, and Anthropic, offering improvements in reasoning, multilingual capabilities, and efficiency.

Introducing the Llama API for Developers

In addition to the standalone app, Meta also announced an application programming interface (API) for its Llama AI models. Unveiled at the company’s first AI developer conference, called LlamaCon, this API is intended to make it easier for businesses and developers to build their own AI products using Llama. This Llama API will compete with offerings from Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Google, and emerging low-cost alternatives like DeepSeek.

While APIs are a primary revenue source for companies like OpenAI, Meta did not disclose pricing details for the Llama API. The API is currently available as a limited preview for select customers, with a broader rollout expected in the coming weeks to months.

Meta is also exploring monetization strategies for its AI. The company plans to test a paid subscription service for advanced versions of its AI chatbot in the second quarter. However, this subscription service may not generate significant revenue until at least next year.

Meta’s strategy with its Llama models has been to release them largely free-of-charge for developers. Mark Zuckerberg believes this approach will foster innovative products, reduce dependence on competitors, and increase engagement across Meta’s core social networks.

Quotes from key figures on Meta’s vision

  • Chief Product Officer Chris Cox stated during the LlamaCon keynote, “You can now start using Llama with one line of code”.
  • Manohar Paluri, a vice president of AI at Meta, emphasized the control developers have when using Meta’s models, saying, “You have full agency over these custom models, you control them in a way that’s not possible with other offers”. He added, “Whatever model you customize is yours to take wherever you want, not locked on our servers”.
  • Mark Zuckerberg welcomed increased competition in the AI space, suggesting it would move the ecosystem away from domination by a few leaders. He noted, “If another model, like DeepSeek, is better at something, then now as developers you have the ability to take the best parts of the intelligence from the different models and produce exactly what you need, which I think is going to be very powerful”.
