Jacqueline Stockwell: Pioneering Authentic Leadership in Information Management

The ability to effectively manage and lead through information has become crucial. Information is such a valuable tool. At the forefront of this transformative landscape is Jacqueline Stockwell, CEO and Founder of Leadership Through Data

Jacqueline’s journey, from an information manager in the NHS to founding an innovative training company, tells a compelling story of innovation inspired by her own experiences and a genuine desire to make a difference. Reflecting on her transition, Jacqueline stated, “Leaving the NHS to become a business owner was a path I went on my own. Well, I felt the fear and did it anyway with the support of my partner, and we only had 12 months to make it work” This bold decision marked the start of her mission to make a difference and really change the way information management training is delivered removing the tick box exercise and replace it with memorable and actionable training that is also fun and informative

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Jacqueline’s early years working within the NHS provided her with a deep understanding of the law and legislation, including Data Protection, Freedom of Information, and Records Management, as well as the complexities of managing information in a large, multifaceted organisation.

Although her academic background—a degree in Business Management and a Master’s in Healthcare Management—equipped her with theoretical knowledge, she soon realized that achieving entrepreneurial success required a different kind of learning. “Despite these qualifications, they weren’t particularly helpful in my career transition,” she admitted.

This realisation prompted her to embark on a journey of self-education, where she grew her mind and read hundreds of entrepreneurial books. This intense period of learning was not without its challenges. Jacqueline acknowledges the lessons she learned through trial and error, stating, “I learned a great deal from my mistakes, which I believe is the best way to learn they are Magic Mistakes, although I wish I had known about some of the mistakes beforehand to avoid making them”.

These early experiences, which were sometimes expensive, formed the foundation of her understanding of authentic leadership and the importance of practical, real-world training.

The Catalyst for Change: A Mission to Revolutionise Learning

Driven by a desire to exceed the limitations of “death by PowerPoint,” Jacqueline founded Leadership Through Data with a clear and compelling mission: to empower individuals and organisations through innovative training methods and change the way information management training is delivered globally. These methods include live, self-paced, and blended learning approaches. The goal is to ensure a culture of continuous learning, that participants are not only engaged but also ready to apply their newly acquired knowledge effectively.

The company’s training philosophy focuses on understanding how people learn and the effectiveness of various teaching styles. By applying principles of behavioural psychology, Leadership Through Data designs its programs to meet the diverse learning needs of information managers. Their dedication lies in providing high-quality training that not only meets essential compliance standards but is also engaging and seamlessly integrates into daily workflows. A core objective is to elevate the perception of information management and privacy, positioning them as critical organisational assets, the “blood and oxygen” that sustains a company.

Jacqueline also emphasises the importance of the digital learning experience, stating, “We strive to make eLearning as effective as in-person training. By using technology and creating engaging content, we transform online training into an impactful experience. This ensures that participants are not only informed but also motivated to utilise their new skills and knowledge.” This commitment to leveraging technology to create engaging and effective online learning experiences is a cornerstone of Leadership Through Data’s philosophy.

Leadership Through Data: A Comprehensive Ecosystem of Learning Solutions

Leadership Through Data has developed a comprehensive ecosystem of learning solutions tailored to meet the diverse needs of both individual professionals and large organisations. Their offerings are thoughtfully structured to provide flexible and effective learning pathways.

For individuals looking to enhance their skills, the Public Seats program offers a variety of training courses focused on information management and Microsoft 365 privacy. Options include single seat purchases, discounts for information management who are an association member.

Recognising the unique requirements of organisations, the In-House Training program provides customisable and interactive courses on all information management courses from Privacy and Data Protection, Records Management and Freedom of Information and Microsoft 365 for records managers. These courses are designed for teams of 6 to 10 people and incorporate visual aids and engaging games to encourage active participation.

On-demand learning is essential in today’s learning environment. The On-Demand Microsoft 365 is a subscription-based service that offers demos and comprehensive how-to guides for essential platforms such as Teams, SharePoint, Power BI, and PowerApps.

Understanding the value of bite-sized learning, Jacqueline’s company has introduced the innovative 522 Droplets format, which delivers micro-learning through short, focused sessions consisting of 5 minutes of video, 2 minutes of quizzes or activities, and 2 minutes of reflective learning. This subscription-based service also provides comprehensive Microsoft 365 training.

For organisations seeking a holistic approach to developing their information leaders, the flagship Empower Program stands out. This extensive 12-month professional development plan addresses various critical areas, including engagement (public speaking, communication, negotiations), management (leadership skills, coaching), policies and processes (information architecture, business classification, retention schedules), oversight (risk management, audits), workforce (team building), and excellence (personal branding, influence within the business).

In addition to these structured programs, Leadership Through Data offers consultancy services, providing ongoing support and mentoring with flexible hour purchase options.

Leveraging Behavioural Psychology and the Power of Colour Communication

Leadership Through Data has a unique way of training and that combines ideas from behavioural psychology and communication styles based on colours. Jacqueline explained, “Personality psychology and colour communication styles significantly influence learning effectiveness for business leaders.”

She believes that understanding these “colour energies” provides huge benefits in team dynamics. This understanding highlights each member’s complementary strengths and how they can be leveraged for collective success.

The company utilizes methods that explain different personality types and communication preferences. One of the key tools they use is the DISC framework, which identifies four colours: Cool Blue, Earth Green, Sunshine Yellow, and Fiery Red. Each colour represents different personality traits, strengths, and areas where improvement is needed. This framework helps facilitate better communication and collaboration within the team and with clients.

However, Leadership Through Data’s training methodology itself focuses on active engagement through various interactive techniques. Jacqueline clarified, “For our training programs, we move beyond colour-based learning and instead utilize a dynamic mix of games, team discussions, practical exercises, and a hands-on training environment, which we call a ‘sandbox’.” This approach ensures participants are actively involved in the learning process, making the training memorable, actionable, and fun.

Making Online Training as Engaging as In-Person Experiences

Jacqueline and her team at Leadership Through Data have developed key strategies to ensure their online sessions are as impactful as traditional in-person training. They utilise interactive elements such as quizzes, team games, and group discussions to keep participants actively engaged. Additionally, they incorporate multimedia resources, including videos and infographics, to accommodate different learning styles.

Understanding the significance of ongoing support, they offer regular feedback and create a sense of community through group forums. Their blended learning approach often includes micro-learning and live training sessions delivered by trainers to ensure that participants are progressing as expected. As Jacqueline stated, “These strategies help mirror the benefits of in-person training in a digital environment.”

Core Values Shaping a Purpose-Driven Organization

At the core of Jacqueline’s leadership and the principles guiding Leadership Through Data are a set of deeply held values. As she emphasizes, “My key values are honesty, positivity, and making a real difference in the industry.” These principles are actively integrated into the company’s operations and its interactions with clients and partners.

Jacqueline’s commitment to a culture of honesty, transparency and trust. Her positive energy, often described as “infectious,” creates an engaging and motivating environment for both her team and her clients. Above all, her dedication to making a tangible impact in the industry drives the company’s mission to provide training that truly empowers and transforms individuals.

Embedding Information Security and Privacy into Organizational DNA

Jacqueline advocates for integrating information security and privacy into daily organisational operations. “Companies must embed security and privacy training into their regular training programs,” she asserted, emphasizing that “Information is the lifeblood of any organization. It must be protected.”

To achieve this, Leadership Through Data uses practical examples and case studies to teach staff how these standards apply to their roles, while regular updates and refresher courses keep employees informed about the latest practices and threats.

Moreover, Jacqueline believes that creating a culture of continuous learning begins with strong leadership. She asserts that leaders should lead by example by actively participating in learning activities and demonstrating their own commitment to personal growth. It is also essential to provide access to a variety of resources, including online courses, training programs, conferences, and workshops.

Additionally, recognising and rewarding employees who actively pursue learning opportunities can motivate others to do the same. As Jacqueline commented, “Training is a long-term investment not only in the individual but also for the organization, as it benefits both. It isn’t a cost!”

Drawing from her own experiences and the challenges she has overcome, Jacqueline offers valuable advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs who may be hesitant to leave traditional career paths. Her message is one of empowerment and encouragement: “My advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs is to believe in their vision, take risks and have a plan.”

She advises them to weigh the potential downsides against the potential rewards, sharing her own perspective: “Way up ‘what is the worst that would happen, in my case if my business didn’t work out I would just get a job as an information leader in an organisation again.” Building a strong support network of mentors, business coaches, and friends is crucial, as the entrepreneurial journey can sometimes be lonely.

Make sure you have someone!

Her final words of wisdom are both inspiring and practical: “Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to grow and achieve your goals so be bold, be brave and be beautiful.”
