Anthropic's New AI

Why Anthropic’s New AI Is Alarming the Authorities

Anthropic’s new AI model, commonly referred to as “Mythos,” has sparked an unprecedented level of apprehension among government agencies, banking institutions, and cybersecurity professionals.

The fears surrounding this release go beyond mere industry hype — its demonstrated operational abilities and the subsequent public reaction underscored the severity of the threat, leading to an emergency meeting between regulators and major financial institutions.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell convened a high-level meeting, warning leading bank CEOs of the risks posed by the model. What was supposed to be a good omen for the upcoming Anthropic IPO has instead turned into institutional anxiety.

According to Reuters, the discussion focused primarily on cybersecurity threats, with officials urging financial institutions to prepare for potential disruptions. The fact that such a meeting took place, bringing together systemically important banks, is a clear signal that this is no mere technological curiosity.

The Mythos system utilizes its advanced capability to identify software weaknesses to execute attacks at speeds and scales far exceeding human capacity. The model detects security flaws across all major operating systems and web browsers while also discovering “zero-day” vulnerabilities — flaws previously undisclosed to developers. Moreover, it has even uncovered security vulnerabilities that remained undetected for twenty years, effectively outperforming professional cybersecurity experts. The evolution of AI from an analytical tool to a potentially offensive system has become a primary concern for global authorities.

The banking sector is particularly vulnerable, as it depends on a complex web of interconnected digital systems often containing outdated components that security teams find challenging to rectify.

An AI system capable of uncovering such vulnerabilities could empower cybercriminals to orchestrate large-scale exploits against payment networks, data systems, and market infrastructure. Therefore, regulators view this as a threat that could destabilize the entire system.

The accessibility of the model adds another layer of concern. Multiple reports indicate that Anthropic has confirmed that Mythos can help users with no technical knowledge to generate operational cyber exploits.

This dramatically lowers the barrier to entry for cybercrime. The use of AI technologies enables malicious groups to execute cyber attacks without requiring expert hacking skills. This “democratization” of offensive capability is a major shift in the cybersecurity landscape.

The United States is not the only country facing this danger. Other countries have conducted similar emergency talks, such as in Canada, where financial leaders and regulators assembled to evaluate identical threats. This demonstrates a broader recognition that AI-driven cyber risks are global and could affect interconnected financial systems worldwide.

In response, Anthropic has established an unusual access restriction for Claude Mythos, allowing only a select group of trusted organizations to use the model. Among them are some of the leading companies from the stock screener — including Microsoft, Nvidia, and Apple — which are testing the model to identify security vulnerabilities in their systems and secure the infrastructure. The firm decided to contain the launch, as they need to protect themselves against potential violations in the usage of the product.

Today, many experts warn that if such technology were to fall into the hands of hostile actors, it could allow sophisticated cyberattacks with disastrous economic and national security consequences.
