MindStir Media Review: An Established Self-Publishing Company Built by an Author, for Authors

There is no shortage of companies willing to help someone publish a book. The harder task is finding one that understands what happens after the manuscript becomes a finished product.

That distinction is where MindStir Media has built much of its reputation.

Founded in 2009 by bestselling author J.J. Hebert, MindStir Media has developed from a publishing company created around Hebert’s own experience as an independent author into a full-service operation serving writers across the United States and beyond. According to the company, Hebert originally founded MindStir in connection with the publication of his debut novel, Unconventional, a book that went on to exceed 100,000 sales and downloads.

More than 15 years later, MindStir looks considerably different from the typical publishing-services business.

The company provides professional editing, custom cover and interior design, publishing, distribution and book marketing under one roof. It has also helped publish more than 1,000 books, according to its website.

That history matters. Publishing companies are surprisingly easy to start. Publishing companies that survive multiple changes in Amazon, social media, digital advertising, distribution and consumer buying habits are considerably less common.

Where MindStir Media Stands Apart

The strongest argument for MindStir isn’t simply that it can produce a professional-looking book. Plenty of service providers can do that.

MindStir’s more interesting differentiator is the degree to which publishing and promotion have been integrated into the same business.

Its services extend into editing, design, distribution and marketing, while its promotional ecosystem has included bestseller campaigns, publicity, advertising, social media exposure and other author-marketing opportunities.

That makes MindStir particularly relevant for an author who does not simply want to say, “I published a book.”

The better fit is someone asking, “What can I do with the book once it exists?”

For an entrepreneur, executive, consultant, speaker or aspiring career author, that is an important distinction. A professionally produced book can become an authority asset, a credibility builder, a source of media opportunities or a foundation for a larger personal brand. Production is only one part of that equation.

MindStir appears to understand the other part unusually well.

The J.J. Hebert Factor

Founder involvement has also been central to MindStir’s positioning.

Hebert isn’t a publishing executive who entered the business solely from the corporate side. He is himself a USA Today, Wall Street Journal and No. 1 Amazon bestselling author, and MindStir promotes ongoing author mentoring as part of its model. Each author is also assigned a project representative to help navigate the publishing process.

That origin story gives the company a perspective many publishing providers cannot easily manufacture.

Hebert first encountered publishing from the author’s chair.

There is a meaningful difference between learning what writers want through surveys and sales meetings and having personally written, published and marketed books. MindStir’s evolution appears to have been influenced by the latter.

Its model addresses many of the recurring pain points independent authors face: finding reliable editors, coordinating designers, formatting multiple editions, navigating distribution and, perhaps most importantly, figuring out how anyone is going to discover the finished book.

Instead of forcing authors to assemble five or six unrelated vendors, MindStir offers the possibility of consolidating much of that work.

Marketing Is the Bigger Story

Book publishing has become technologically easier. Book discovery has not.

Amazon and print-on-demand technology have lowered many of the barriers that once prevented writers from reaching the marketplace. The unintended consequence is that authors now compete against an enormous volume of other titles.

This is where MindStir’s history in book marketing becomes particularly significant.

The company showcases a portfolio of bestselling and award-winning titles and has developed relationships and promotional programs involving recognizable personalities. MindStir currently highlights relationships with entrepreneur and Shark Tank original Kevin Harrington and Mariel Hemingway, among others.

Those kinds of opportunities position MindStir differently from bare-bones self-publishing platforms whose involvement largely ends when files are uploaded and distribution is activated.

MindStir is selling a managed publishing experience rather than access to publishing software.

There is a considerable difference between the two.

A Company With Staying Power

Another factor worth considering is the business itself.

MindStir has appeared on the Inc. 5000 ranking of fast-growing private American companies, including in consecutive years beginning in 2023. Its current company materials describe more than 15 years in operation.

For authors evaluating publishing companies, longevity has practical value.

A publishing relationship can stretch across months and sometimes years. Authors may return for additional editions, marketing, distribution questions and subsequent books. An established operating history doesn’t guarantee a perfect experience, but it is a meaningful piece of due diligence in an industry crowded with newer companies.

Who Is MindStir Media Best For?

MindStir Media probably makes the most sense for the author who places a premium on professional guidance and would rather have an established team handle multiple pieces of the process.

A highly experienced independent publisher who already has trusted editors, designers, advertising specialists and distribution systems may not need that infrastructure.

A first-time author, busy professional or writer seeking meaningful marketing support is a different story.

For that customer, convenience alone can be valuable. Add an experienced publishing organization, author mentoring and sophisticated promotional options, and the value proposition becomes considerably clearer.

MindStir Media Review: The Verdict

MindStir Media’s greatest strength may be that it doesn’t appear to view publication as the finish line.

It treats publishing as the beginning of a larger process involving presentation, distribution, visibility and author positioning.

That approach can be traced back to the company’s origins. J.J. Hebert built MindStir after navigating independent publishing himself, and over more than a decade and a half, the company has expanded that experience into a much broader publishing platform.

For writers who simply want the cheapest possible route to upload a book, there are undoubtedly simpler alternatives.

For authors looking for an experienced team capable of taking a manuscript from editing and design through publication and into serious promotion, MindStir Media belongs on the shortlist.

Overall assessment: A highly established full-service self-publishing option, particularly compelling for authors who place as much importance on marketing their book as publishing it.
