Ford Mustang to Race in Next Year’s NASCAR Top Series

The Ford Fusion is about to make its way out in the North American market, but it doesn’t make sense for Ford to keep running a Fusion-wrapped rear-wheel-drive V8 on the track every weekend in NASCAR’s top series. Ford’s bringing in the Mustang, to take its place next year.

Ford showcased the new Mustang on Thursday, and it looks about like you’d expect—a toned-down version of the production body, with stickers for headlights and racing graphics on it. The cool part is, unlike other NASCAR cars, the street Mustang actually has a Rear Wheel Drive V8 option.

Ford announced earlier this year that the Mustang would be its new Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series car starting in 2019, since Ford’s phasing out almost all of its cars out of the North American market over the next few years except for the Mustang and Focus Active. But in NASCAR, it’s not all hunky dory replacing the family sedan with an actual muscle car.

Ford has had an upperhand with the Fusions in the Cup Series this season, and according to the Detroit News, driver Brad Keselowski said introducing the car could go in any way. It could be great, or it could go like Chevrolet’s Camaro ZL1 intro has this year—slow and frustrating.

Of 22 Cup Series races this year, Chevy’s won two. The other manufacturers, Ford and Toyota, have won all of the others. Here’s what Keselowski said, from the Detroit News:

“The big question mark for us is, when Chevrolet built a car and Toyota built their car, they pretty much knew what the rules were going to be, for the next season,” Keselowski said.

“This year, probably more so than any year I’ve ever been a part of, there’s such a question as to what the rules are going to be for next year,” Keselowski perplexed.

“I think it’s very hard to predict whether the Mustang is going to come out next year and be the best car, or come out next year and be the worst car.”

Either way, it’ll probably make things interesting.
